Nuwe Huis / New House

Ons het onlangs besluit om ‘n huis te koop en wil graag die nuus met julle deel. Ons het Vrydag, 16 November die kontrak gesluit en Saterdag begin intrek. Daar is nog ‘n paar bokse wat ons moet uitpak, maar die meeste goed het al ‘n nuwe plek in ons huis. Dit is ‘Thanksgiving’ hier in Amerika en ons het regtig baie om voor dankbaar te wees. Ons is ook baie dankbaar dat my ma hier kan wees om deel te wees van ons vreugde.

We recently decided to buy a house and we would like to share the news with you. We signed the contract on Friday November 16th and we started moving in on Saturday. There are still a few boxes that needs to be unpacked, but most of our stuff has a new place in our house. It is Thanksgiving in the U.S.A. and we really have a lot to be thankful for. We are also very thankful that my mom is here with us to share in our joy.

End of 2006 – 2007 School Year

June 7 th, 2007 – last day for students! What a year this has been. I am so proud of the students in our class this year. They have worked hard and had a successful year. I teach at a Title 1 school and almost all of the students have had a hard life – even if it is just a primary school. These children come to school from broken homes and poverty. Learning just isn’t their biggest concern. When I think back to when I was 6, my concerns were who I was going to play with, would it be sunny or rainy, and how happy will my dog be to see me after school. I was fortunate to have 2 loving parents, a brother I could play with and a house that I felt safe and secure in. This is not the case for many of our students.

This is a salute to teachers! We do make a difference, even if it doesn’t always feel that way. Have a wonderful summer!

Last Week

I woke up Tuesday morning with a bite on my arm. It was red and swollen, but I decided to go to work. When I arrived at work, my co-worker said I should see the school nurse to show her my arm. Well, she just took one look and said I had to go see the doctor. I waited until 8:30 and went to the doctor’s office. When he saw my arm, he wanted to hospitalize me. He said it was serious and after a long debate and a $114.00 prescription, I went back to work. (No hospital for me!) The next morning, my arm felt and looked much better. I felt good and just kept on drinking the pills.

Friday morning, I could hardly get out of bed. My lower back was hurting like mad. I got the Yellow Pages and called the first chiropractor I could find. 30 Minutes later I was on the table with the doctor pushing, pulling and stretching every muscle in my body. (Ruk-en-pluk dokter – sowaar!)

Today, Monday, as we are driving back from work and start telling my friend about all the doctors’ visits, etc.,etc. My ten year old in the back of the van made this comment: “You are getting old Mommy!”

Maybe, maybe not. The doctor won’t see me again soon. I feel fine!

To my darling husband,

Before you return from your overseas trip I just want to let you know about the small accident I had with the pick up truck when I turned into the driveway. Fortunately not too bad and I really didn’t get hurt, so please don’t worry too much about me.
I was coming home from Wal-Mart, and when I turned into the driveway I accidentally pushed down on the accelerator instead of the brake. The garage door is slightly bent but the pick up fortunately came to a halt when it bumped into your car; I am really sorry, but I know with your kind-hearted personality you will forgive me. You know how much I love you and care for you my sweetheart. I am enclosing a picture for you. I cannot wait to hold you in my arms again. Your loving wife.

Living in South Africa

“Follow up on living in SA…”

We have been living in the USA for almost 5 years now. What do I miss? The beauty of our county, beaches, mountains, desert sands, plants and animals. I miss friends and family and the people from the Friendly City. I miss koeksusters, beskuit, cane, passion fruit and lemonade, Spur burgers, braaivleis, and the fact that you can drop in for a cup of coffee without making an appointment! I miss the flower gardens in fenced in yards, swimming pools in the back yard and neighbours that talk to you.

I miss TV and movies in Afrikaans (Sonkring, Agter Elke Man, Fiela se Kind) Noot vir Noot, Carte Blance and OopKykTyd! I often get a shipment of Huisgenote thanks to my sister-in-law. I am not a sports fan, but I miss the afternoons I can take my book and read while my husband and mom watch cricket and rugby! I miss the children that want to learn, because education is so important to them.

Would I ever go back to South Africa? YES! When? I do not know – here we have work, hardly any crime, and a good life. I know we can’t always get what we want, but we all want the best for our children and I hope by being here, we are giving our child a future and a wonderful experience. I feel blessed that we have had the priviledge to broaden our horizons. I miss South Africa.

What a sad day

My aunt passed away in January 2007.

It was such a sad time.

When I was in High School, she and her family lived across the street from the school. My brother and I went to their house in the afternoons, until my mom could come pick us up. They were so good to us, and their house was our second home. She always had something to eat and it was never too much trouble for her and her husband to look after us when my mom had meetings or had to work late. In happy or sad times, she was the first relative to arrive to share in our happiness or grief. She was the one who took me to the town where I had my first teaching job. She was also the one who opened her home to me when I gave birth to my daughter. I stayed with her for two weeks prior to having my daughter, and we went to Tyger Valley almost everyday. She cooked the most delicious food and when my daughter grew up, the first things she always asked for when we visited my aunt, was pancakes. She always made time for us and we could always count on her.

I miss her. I do not think that I realize that I will not see her again, but I know that when we visit South Africa, I will realize that I won’t ever get the chance to visit her.

She leaves behind 3 wonderful children, a beautiful granddaughter and caring ex-husband. She also leaves behind fond memories. She was such a happy, giving lady, always ready with a smile!

Second post – I know I will have to stop counting soon. I have a lot to learn about blogging and adding information. It is exciting and I have some time on my hands.

I can’t wait to let my friends and family know to “check it out”. Before I can do that I have to make it worth their while.
